Born in Auburn, Alabama, Ms. McInnis is a long-term resident of Okaloosa County where she followed a career in public education while she and her husband raised two boys in Niceville. She was reared in the South in a family rich in values of self-sufficiency. It was expected in a matter of fact way that creativity was to be included in this pursuit. She has followed a long passion for expressing herself creatively in the mediums of oils, concrete, tile, but primarily prefers watercolor. No matter the medium, it has been said of her work that she Stirs Emotions with Paint.
While her typical subject matter varies widely, many of her pieces depict life typical of Coastal Communities including beach scenes, local fishing vessels, and colorful characters. She has won awards and recognition in North and South Florida for her saturated florals. Her 2014 “Top of the Class” entry awarded her a Solo Show for 2015. Her depiction of a grandparent’s affection for a child not only won her a 2015 Honorable mention and People’s Choice awards, but has caused her to be commissioned for many “personality portraits”.
“There is so much heart and soul in them that her paintings are captivating. The overwhelming emotions I experienced when the image was captured come to mind and cause my eyes to well over every time I look at the painting; it brings me to tears. There is just so much emotion that comes through.” K.P. (Quote from one of her collectors, )
Theresia is an active member of several local art groups and participates routinely in art events: Okaloosa Public Arts (currently at the new Court House Admin. Bldg), Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County, Arts and Design Society of Okaloosa, Emerald Coast Plein-air Group, and Mattie Kelly Arts. She has won awards in many of the above-mentioned venues including the winner of 2015 and 2017 Destin Seafood Festival Poster.
The medium of watercolor is preferred because of all the wonderfully luminescent colors that are displayed when allowed to blend on the paper! I’m excited to paint an experience of world around us giving a “Sense and feel” of it in vivid color. The ideal audience for me is someone that gets involved in the stories spun in my pieces and is then evoked to bring his/her own experiences to the subject. I like to think that I stir emotions with paint!
